A version 2.4.1 of the free OpenOffice.org office suite has been put online, mainly to correct a security vulnerability.
A security vulnerability affects
OpenOffice.org for versions ranging from 2.0 to 2.4. Particularly described as highly critical by the Danish company Secunia with a hint of danger to 4 on a scale up to 5, that loophole can be exploited to remotely compromise a vulnerable system via the execution of arbitrary code.
More specifically, it is due to an overflow present at the function rtl_allocateMemory() which fails to adequately address certain malformed data. The risk for the user becomes a real opening a document specially designed.
Not in french for the moment
This vulnerability is, however, supported in the 2.4.1 version of the free office suite published last week. For now, and as is often the case with OOo, a gap exists between the anglophone and francophone version. Thus, the declination French OOo 2.4.1 still lacks the appeal but should not delay to be available. For users who like to work with the language of Shakespeare, they can already proceed with the repatriation from the official website of OpenOffice.org.
Version 2.4.1 of OOo also brings some improvements as detailed in the release notes. Among these improvements, support for MS Access 2007 files (*. accdb) for the RDBMS Base, automatic notification for updating extensions, and other small revisions. Remember also that version 3.0 of OpenOffice.org is in gestation with a first beta version already available, and the “rehabilitation” of VBA in sight for example.
